This is the original, accept no substitutes.
If you like your ninja action straight up - no shiny gold costumes, no magic powers, no chunky white marine ninja wannabes - this one is for you.
And no, there's nothing wrong with your vision - Shinobi no Mono was filmed in glorious black and white.
This was the very first movie, and probably the last, for that matter, which depicted ninja in a realistic manner.
Or at least, as realistic as possible for something so seeped in folklore and fantasy.
It came on the heels of dozens of bestselling ninja novels, many of which have been made into films, sometimes several times.
Shinobi no Mono is based on one of these novels, written by Maruyama Kazuyoshi.
Shinobi no Mono starts slow, and with the most confusing expository monologue I've ever heard.
But after that it finds its groove and ends up being an incredibly enjoyable film.
The acting is quite good, with Ichikawa Raizo playing a most sympathetic Goemon, and Ito Yunosuke as the really weird and nasty-looking leader(s) of the ninja clans.





Nowhere to Hide (1999)

Lee Myung-sae has been called the "Korean Wong Kar-wai" for his visual creativity, irreverent genre deconstruction and unconventional narratives. Here he steps out of the romantic comedy genre and creates this exciting, visually stunning exercise in style. It revived Park Joong-hoon's career, and gave hope to those who want something more than another Heroic Bloodshed clone or the umpteenth Young and Dangerous spin-off.





The Big Swindle (2004)

The Big Swindle is an entertaining, if overly familiar caper movie. Director Choi Dong-hoon and star Baek Yun-sik were at the screening I attended, and while Choi mentioned films like Bullitt as an influence on the work, the more obvious influence, for better or worse, was Steven Soderbergh’s remake of Ocean’s Eleven. It’s definitely an example of style over substance, but thanks to Baek as the film’s crimelord heavy, Master Kim), the estimable Yeom Jeong-ah (one of my favorite actresses, having seen her in this and A Tale of Two Sisters) as Seo In-kyung, the scheming love interest, and Park Shin-yang in the complex lead role, along with a strong supporting cast, the film is more emotionally involving than one might expect.

A pair of escaped convicts meet up with a group of gangsters by a remote forest road. After an arguement over a girl the mobsters have kidnapped, shots are fired and one of the gangsters is killed. The standoff is cut short, however, when the dead man suddenly springs to life and starts trying to kill his former friends. The zombie eventually goes down in a hail bullets, but their problems aren't over. It seems the gangsters have been using this forest to dispose of of their victims, all of whom are now looking to settle some old scores. Even if they get through this mess, there is still the question of why they've arranged to meet the convicts out here, and why they've brought along the girl. How are they connected to the dead bodies coming back to life?
